*In 1993-8-7, Guan Zi Zai won the “Best of Mime Now!” competition of International Movement Theatre Festival of New Mime, the Top Three. The festival is presented by Movement Theatre International Philadelphia, *《觀自在》於1993-8-7 獲美國費城國際默劇節「Best of Mime Now!」競賽前三名。

“Guan Zi Zai”, is one of the Chinese transliteration of the Sanskrit “Avalokite’svara”. It is the word permutations of ava, avaloka, lokita, ‘savara, i’svara…etc. In ancient China, there are also some different translations of “Guanyin, Guanyin, Guangshi. Therefore, “conceptuality" in terms of title, is a certain name Guanyin Bodhisattva. However, in terms of its connotation, “Guan" refers to the highest attaining wisdom of life. “Zi Zai" means that it will be free from the wisdom. In Buddhism, where anyone can see wisdom and freedom, there he can be like the Buddha as a moral name, with “Guan Zi Zai".
In this performance, “Zi Zai" refers to a calm mind, since the redeemed by performer. But what is the “Zi Zai" of other people? To provide the audience deeply thinking, as a performer, Liu also try to debate by some different forms of performance as the witness of life. Through this performance, Liu expecting to explore the ideas of life for the audience, art for the artist and himself.
The story is divided into two parts. The first half is the drama, about a male actor in facing of playing an ancient female Kabuki dancer. When he was trying to make a connection with the character, he found the conflict by heart of the community, family, love, and even acting skills. After the second part of Kabuki dance, the actor’s all kinds of human nature of struggle, such as sublimation, escape…etc., were turned into the expression of physical movements. Finally, through dancing, the actor and the dancer get freedom of mind.
故事分為兩大部分，前半戲劇情節部份在描述當一名男演員在面臨飾演一個新角色 – 一位古代女性歌舞伎時，所激越出對社會、親情、愛情，乃至其表演志業的思慮與實踐步驟。後半舞蹈部份為，這名男演員飾演女舞伎時，內心的掙扎、昇華、逃避、追逐等，種種人性上的課題，均幻化成肢體抽象的表達，最後在透過女舞伎的舞蹈中，得到解脫。（摘錄自首演節目單）
